Developing and Supporting Effective Staff Supervision explores how to train staff to deliver sound and effective supervision that makes a real difference to health and social care service users. It draws out key components of the supervision model presented in Tony Morrison's training pack of the same name (Pavilion, 2005) without dumbing down or over-simplifying the issues, and adds more recent developments of the approach and further detail on aspects of supervision theory. The underpinning belief throughout the reader is that working with human relationships is complex and demanding, and cannot be packaged neatly into a one-size-fits-all prescribed way of responding.
Morrison's supervision model and its accompanying tools have always been designed to enable practitioners to respond to the individual nature of the issues they are working with and create a reflective space for exploring challenging issues and ideas, using the knowledge generated through the process to inform both front line practice and the strategic direction of the organisation. The author of this reader, Jane Wonnacott, was a close colleague of Tony Morrison and her work is consistent with the guiding principle of his approach to take complex ideas, make them accessible to a wide audience and alongside this give people tools to help them in their day-to-day practice.
