Jan Owen writes of childhood and nature, of relationships, travel, art and science. Many poems in The Offhand Angel shuttle between widely differing perspectives: the local and the exotic, the cosmic and the microcosmic, the physical and the metaphysical. A sense of transience and loss is balanced by the sensuousness and musicality of her work, and by a driving curiosity about the world.

Summary: This 2015 collection by Jan Owen brings together selected poems from across her career along with newer work, offering a broad view of her poetic voice and themes. At its core, the book explores the interplay between imagination and reality, often symbolised by the "offhand angel" a playful, elusive figure representing creative inspiration or the poetic muse. Rather than a religious being, this "angel" reflects the workings of the mind and artistic impulse, appearing unpredictably and shaping perception.
