Présentation de l'éditeur

In the book Arna Skula discusses ways to improve sleep habits, how to solve sleep problems, and the role of parents in establishing and maintaining good sleep habits in their babies and small children. The first part of the book deals generally with babies' sleep and sleeping habits, parents' roles, and sleeping problems. The second part provides practical guidelines as to what to expect and how to manage sleep at different ages, and addresses the main issues for parents and babies at each stage of development. Help for parents in understanding the role of sleep in their baby's routine at every stage Offers an overview of realistic expectations from newborn to age two Charts detail typical waking, sleeping and feeding patterns Answers to a wide range of questions from real parents based on the author's experience of working with babies and their parents Guidance for parents in special circumstances, such as those with twins or premature babies Support for parents whose babies suffer from colic, ear infections and other problems that can disrupt good sleep patterns. ................... AUTHOR COMMENTS:----People hold many different views or beliefs on sleeping problems as is the case with the all important issues that have to do with upbringing. There are many books written on infant and children s sleep problems and how to deal with them. Some books recommend quite strict behavioural techniques, while others take propound a softer approach. Both strict and soft ways of dealing with sleep problems have quite good support from evidence-based literature, which makes it even more complicated for parents to choose the approach they should believe in and use. Very few books talk about approaches that would be categorised as between these two, what most of us would call the normal approach. Sweet Dreams is such a book; it helps parents to understand normal sleep, the influence of age on children s behaviour and developmental issues. My objective in writing Sweet Dreams was to give parents information on different things that can influence a child s sleep enabling them to understand what is going on with their own child and so make it more likely for them to choose the most suitable approach for both them and their child. The many stories in the book are actual examples from my cases and describe a range of problems and different solutions. It is my belief that the most important thing in bringing up a child is to realise that each child is unique and consequently that all children will not be helped by the same approach. My aim is to guide parents to train their sensitivity towards their child, so they can build on their child s potentials and strengths and help with the child s weaknesses. AUTOR COMMENTS:- My work in a hospital-based sleep clinic in Iceland for the last 20 years has mainly been with breastfed infants the majority of infants in Iceland are breastfeed until they are 9 12 months of age but I also see mothers whose babies are not able to breast feed and I m aware of the added emotional problems they have. The information about SIDS is fully in line with international guidelines. Moreover, the incidence of SIDS in Iceland is one of the lowest in the world. There is nothing remotely improper about my advice; I simply describe how to apply widely used techniques in the best possible way.
