Foreword: I was asked recently why so many of my short stories had unhappy endings, but in this collection I can promise that some will end happily. These stories were written over a period spanning the last twenty years. Some are entirely fictional, but many are based on or inspired by my own experiences and personal observations. Here are comedy, romance, friendship and family, love and loss. Central to the book are three longer stories. 'Sweet' is a piece of historical fiction, set in Idaho at the beginning of the twentieth century. The title story, 'Oh You Pretty Thing' is a novella that incorporates elements of my own earlier life: a young, quite thoughtless married woman realises she has made the wrong life choice. Finally, 'The Time of Their Lives' is a narrative in four sections about growing up in a one-parent family. One of these stories touches on my own experience of childhood abuse, an area I've never addressed before through my writing. With the exception of a couple of stories, I've written these primarily for lesbian readers. Not intentionally, but the themes reflect my own history, and I've spent a long time as part of the lesbian community. This is my second collection of stories and a chance to put together work which has (mostly) not been seen before. I think there is a story here for everyone - or at least, I hope so. - VG Lee
