Synopsis

Following Animalinside and The Bill, we are pleased to introduce our third collaboration to date with L¤szlì Krasznahorkai. As part of his fellowship at the Dorothy and Lewis B. Cullman Center for Scholars and Writers at the New York Public Library, Krasznahorkai has spent the past year writing a novella inspired by a reading of Moby Dick. Following in Herman Melvilles footsteps, however, a second, additional book has begun to take shape: an account of the incidences and coincidences that shape the process of writing and creating. We are currently working with Krasznahorkai to create this second publication. The project aims to explore the act of creation through the lens of Krasznahorkais encounter with Melville, and others who have crossed Melvilles path literally, fictionally and otherwise over the years. Alongside Krasznahorkais text will be photographs that trace these writers and artists interlacing paths across Manhattan, driven by a hunger to unlock the city's inscrutable ways. The photographs also take excursions to other key sites from Melvilles life, including upstate New York and the old whaling port of Nantucket. As Krasznahorkai goes in search of Melville, he winds up searching inside himself for the secret of creativity.
