Michael Morley was born in East Sussex in 1947 and educated at St. Aloysius School in Oxford (now the Oxford Oratory) and at Salesian College, Cowley. His early interest in the past was sparked by a book given to him by his parents at Christmas, 1957, Robin Hood by Antonia Pakenham (Now, Lady Antonia Fraser), which began his lifelong love of real enquiry into medieval, then Tudor and Victorian history. As a Catholic, Michael has naturally had a particular regard for the martyrs and saints of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries; of the hardships endured by the faithful after the dissolution of the monasteries, and of the extraordinary courage of the Catholic priests and their lay helpers willing to suffer ruinous fines, torture and grisly death for the Faith in those penal times. This story of Father John Gerard and the genius of Blessed Nicholas Owen, the builder of so many crafty priest hides, manifests Michael s esteem for the heroes of those days and ends with a short reflective prayer for our own times.... Michael has recently retired as a teacher of History at St. Michael s School, Burghclere, and lives with his wife, Jane, in West Oxfordshire.
