Synopsis

New Buckenham is best known in academic circles as a 12th century planned town that has retained its medieval layout and barely exceeded its historic boundaries. But although New Buckenham never prospered like some early foundations, it was far from a failure and achieved remarkable stability. By 1500 the town was virtually independent of the castle that it had been founded to serve and was apparently unaffected by the slighting of the castle in 1640s. New Buckenham had an active market until about 1800 and remained a centre for the villages around well into the 20th century. This study takes advantage of the extensive documentation available from the early 16th to the late 18th centuries to provide a detailed picture of the trade and industries and an exceptional insight into the working life of a post-medieval market town.
