Synopsis

During lockdown Denis Dunstone sought freedom from confinement by venturing to nearby churchyards with pen, sketch book and camping stool. This was then expanded to cover medieval churches in other English counties and the result, A Church Near You, was published in 2023 and proved to be a bestseller.

Attention has now been turned to old Scottish churches.

The purpose of these books is to draw attention to our wonderful inheritance of old churches, many of which are at risk. Most people are aware of them, but many fail to take time to ask questions about them. The simple approach to describing how churches are composed, using layman's language and colourful sketches, seeks to draw attention, and encourage questions.

Why does this church have a tower?
Why does that church have no tower?
What are those windows high up above the arcade of columns?
Some windows and doorways have rounded tops, others are pointed. Why?
Why are cathedrals entered at one end and churches normally at one side?
What in simple terms is the difference in Scotland between the former cathedrals in Stirling and Perth?

Medieval Churches of Scotland is a beautiful, illustrated companion to A Church Near You
