Architectural Material & Detail Structure Glass by Russell Brown is an in-depth visual and technical exploration of one of the most transformative materials in modern architecture: glass. This comprehensive volume presents a richly illustrated survey of how glass has shaped, and continues to shape, architectural design, construction methods, and aesthetic expression across centuries and continents. The book begins by tracing the historical development of glass, from its earliest use in Mesopotamia around 3500 BC to the innovations of Roman glassmakers, and continues through the Industrial Revolution to contemporary glass engineering. Through this historical lens, the book shows how glass transitioned from being a decorative or sacred material to one that plays a central structural and aesthetic role in buildings today. A large portion of the book is devoted to modern applications of glass in architecture, including: Glass types: float glass, tempered glass, laminated glass, wired glass, glass ceramics, and more. Surface treatments: acid etching, sandblasting, screen printing, enameling, and pattern rolling. Architectural functions: load-bearing elements, curtain walls, facades, skylights, partitions, and decorative elements. Each material and technique is accompanied by detailed technical drawings, photographs, and case studies, providing readers with visual insight into the versatility and performance of glass in real-world settings. Architectural details are illustrated at multiple scales, from curtain wall systems and window units to intricate connections and fixings, offering a hands-on reference for both inspiration and implementation. The book also examines glass as a structural and sustainable material, addressing issues like: Thermal and acoustic insulation Solar control and glare reduction Strength, durability, and safety Integration with steel, wood, concrete, and other structural systems Whether used for transparency, reflection, light diffusion, or aesthetic enhancement, glass plays an essential role in shaping spatial experiences. This book illustrates how architects can harness the physical properties of glasstransparency, fragility, flexibility, reflectivityto create meaningful architectural expressions that balance form, function, and context.
