Beethoven’s sheer force of musical personality has influenced the history of Western music, not only altering the music that composers have written but also transforming their perception of what a composer should be like and what his or her function in society should be.
What follows is a reasonably straightforward, though unavoidably shortened introduction to some of Beethoven’s compositions, slanted towards a handful of concise musical analyses. However, you will catch a glimpse of Beethoven the individual, as shown by those who knew him and the events of the time.
At the age of nine Jeremy Travell won a choral scholarship to Exeter Cathedral choir school to become a chorister.
