RORY O'CONOR was the youngest captain on the Navy List when he assumed command of HMS Hood in 1933. He was lost while in command of the cruiser Neptune in a minefield off Tripoli in December 1941. BRIAN LAVERY, author of several books, including The Last Big Gun, a biography of the career of HMS Belfast, is one of Britain's leading naval historians and a prolific author.
