When a cabal of four senior Wehrmacht officers is placed in charge of the removal of over 4000 gold ingots from a bank vault in Rotterdam, temptation is just too much. Together they conspire to embezzle 40 ingots for their own use to be hidden away in a Swiss safety deposit box until after the war. Complications prevail and the final ten ingots don't make their destination. Instead they are secreted in the hollow chassis of a German army Horch staff car. Some 70 years later Calum Breffit, a young English oil executive, finds himself working in the Baku (Azerbaijan) office of a Houston oil firm. On a chance trip to Kharkov in the Ukraine, Calum s car breaks down and he is forced to seek refuge on a remote farm. There he discovers the abandoned Horch covered in a dusty tarpaulin, complete with swastika pennants and traces of its sinister past. As Calum rebuilds the car step by step, he also begins to uncover its curious back story, linking way back to the German defeat at Stalingrad and forward to an extraordinary connection with his own fiancée.
