Synopsis

Book 3 in the Real Christianity series, “How to study the Bible and why you should”, explains how to study the Bible more effectively. Even in Evangelical and Pentecostal churches, which were once known for their devotion to God’s Word, the Bible is now widely neglected, misunderstood and even ignored. To read the Bible properly does require some skill but, more importantly, that you approach it diligently and with the right heart attitude and method. Many of us find it difficult because nobody has shown us how. Even worse, some have been taught wrong ways, which then handicap them. This book looks at the right way to interpret the Bible, known as the ‘golden rule’. That is to take the Bible literally unless the words used, or the context, plainly indicate that we should do otherwise, such as where a figure of speech is used. It also looks at the main errors in people’s thinking, which undermine faith and promote unbelief, namely ‘scepticism’, ‘liberalism’ and ‘allegorism’ or the ‘allegorical approach’. The author has a very high view of Scripture and would urge you to take it literally and seriously, with a determination to understand it, act upon it, and be changed by it. The Bible is utterly unique. It is God’s Word to us. No equivalent book has ever been, or ever will be, written. The author also advises on Bible translations, recommending those which take a literal ‘word for word’ approach, rather than ‘dynamic equivalence’, or even paraphrasing, which often take liberties with God’s Word. He is convinced that every determined person, provided they can read and write, is able to gain a balanced understanding of the whole Bible for themselves, whoever they are, and regardless of ability or education.
