The events in Gaza in 2023-4 were not the result of a random act of violence but the outcome of a hundred years of conflict between Palestinians and Jews. For many people, particularly those who have only recently become aware of the conflict, the issues seem so complex that it is not worth them trying to understand how this came about. But this book shows, with new archive research, that the root of the conflict is very simple – in 1917, a country that was 90% Palestinian Arab was claimed by another group, Zionist Jews, who formed only 10% of the population. Unlikely as it seems, with the help of Britain and later the US, a large area of Palestine along with the Palestinians who lived in it, was handed over to the Jews in 1948 to create their own state, without the agreement of the Arabs.
During the thirty years that led up to the creation of Israel, the rights of the Palestinians to govern themselves were ignored or denied by Britain, which was in control of Palestine. Furthermore, as the movement to take over Palestine increased in power and influence, Jewish terrorism became an increasingly important tool to force Palestinian Arabs to accept the loss of control over their own lives.
That progressive persecution, denial of rights, and even racism directed against the Palestinians, continuing during the years after Israel was declared, has created a deep sense of injustice among all Palestinians, as they have felt their plight ignored by the countries of the world. James Murray thinks that only by understanding the nature of the treatment of Palestinians over decades and the reasons for their hostility to Israel will a fair and just solution be possible to the seemingly never-ending conflict.
