Lance Thackeray 1867-1916 is known as a designer of humorous postcards whose wit and elegance have never been surpassed. He was far more than that. Tom Askey graduated in medieval history at the University of Manchester, where his postgraduate research led to being recognised as an authority on charitable benefaction in the late medieval period. For many years he was the archivist of a major national art collection, assisting visiting scholars from all around the world. Since retiring he has researched Edwardian book and charity magazine illustrations and their artists, and currently edits the website on his distant kinsman the best-selling popular racing novelist Nat Gould 1857-1919.
