Synopsis

This is the first English edition with commentary of the play since 1891. Euripides died before completing this late masterpiece and it was prepared for its enthusiastically received first performance by his son or nephew. Over the centuries other hands have contributed to the text we now have but even so for the most part it shows Euripides at his finest. After Agamemnon has discovered that the Trojan War can only be fought if he sacrifices his daughter Iphigenia, we witness the break-down of the most dysfunctional family in Greek mythology. The characters are expressively and movingly etched; their confrontations are charted with unsurpassed dramatic power; their shifts and changes can take the breath away, especially Iphigenia s transformation from desperate pleading to a heroic acceptance of her tragic destiny.

Christopher Collard retired in 1996 from the Chair of Classics at Swansea University, Wales; he now lives in Oxford. In this Aris and Phillips Series of Classical Texts he has been the General Editor for Euripides and recently the publisher's adviser and editor for the Series as a whole. His main publications have been, in this Series, Euripides' Hecuba  (1991) and with collaborators Select Fragmentary Plays  (2 vols., 1995 and 2004) and Cyclops and Major Fragments of Greek Satyric Drama (2013); outside this Series, editions of Euripides' Suppliant Women (major 1975, minor 1984) and Fragments (2 vols., 2008; in collaboration); an annotated translation of Aeschylus (2 vols., 2002 and 2008); a selection of his papers, Tragedy, Euripides and Euripideans (2007).

James Morwood is an Emeritus Fellow of Wadham College, Oxford. Among his numerous publications are translations of eleven Euripides plays (including Iphigenia at Aulis) in the Oxford World s Classics series, an edition of Euripides, Suppliants in this series, The Tragedies of Sophocles (Bristol Phoenix Press 2008) and The Plays of Eurpides (revised edition, Bloomsbury 2016). His interest in drama goes beyond the classical world and he has written The Life and Works of Richard Brinsley Sheridan and co-edited Sheridan Studies.
