THE GREATEST EMPIRE IN THE WORLD IS RUN BY A FAT, VAIN MILLIONAIRE. POLITICIANS THROW CHILDISH INSULTS. CORRUPTION IS RIFE. Though ostensibly Surrealist, Alfred Jarry s 1888 play Ubu Roi bears disconcertingly close resemblance to America in 2017. This new version, which brings Ubu to the USA, is a bombastic, irreverent romp through the misadventures of the titular usurper of the White House, with a sharp eye for materialism and political infighting. Slightly Shakespearean, mostly scatological; the ridiculous Ubu Trump is more than a spoof. This satirical translation-palimpsest forms a terrifyingly relevant comment on our world turned upside down.

Alfred Jarry (1873-1907) was a playwright and one of the most significant French Symbolists. His best-known play, Ubu Roi, heralded the arrival of Surrealism and the Theatre of the Absurd when it appeared in 1888, later inspiring Picasso, Burroughs, Beckett and American encyclopaedia of the avant-garde. Rosanna Hildyard is an editor and writer. Her fiction and non-fiction has appeared in The Isis Magazine, The Northern Echo, The Evening Press, and in the anthologies Tactical Reading: A Snappy Guide To The Snap General Election, Adrift and Outside Of Me. Paperback. Etat : new. Paperback. The original late 19th century rebarbative, madcap, knock-about, prematurely-Dadaist and anarchic play of sheer genius (and idiocy) by Alfred Jarry has now been fully and carefully re-imagined and translated from its original language (French) into the English of the Sad 21st Century - the English, alas, of Donald Trump. For in this satiric palimpsest, Pere Ubu is now Ubu Trump - a rich man who wants to be King of America, and, aided and abetted by his family and henchmen, rises to the top while being incorrigibly vulgar, and true to his shocking self. Not a parody, but a genuine contribution to avant-gardist circles, and contemporary cultural debate about transgression and the limits of expression, this is sure to be a go-to book for years to come.
