This book presents compassion as a measurable, teachable, and structurally essential force in clinical practice, education, organisational life, and public health. It draws on interdisciplinary research, meta‑analytic evidence, and direct experience in clinical and organisational settings to show how compassion is received and how fear and shame can block it. It also examines how systems can foster compassionate leadership. A central feature of Compassion from Others is its commitment to multiethnic, multifaith, and culturally plural perspectives, recognising the many ways compassion is understood and expressed across communities. Integrating insights from psychiatry, psychology, public health, and the medical humanities, it offers an inclusive and culturally sensitive account, written in accessible language, for clinicians, educators, policymakers, researchers, and all readers who view compassion as a foundation of human flourishing and a public health imperative.

Carlo Lazzari, MD, is a medical practitioner whose work spans mental health, medical humanities and compassion science. Working within the United Kingdom’s mental health sector, he focuses on how emotional safeness and openness to support can strengthen wellbeing and professional resilience. His clinical and academic experience shows that when people allow themselves to receive compassion from others, they unlock a powerful force for recovery, connection and self‑healing, an insight that underpins the aims and ethos of this book. Muhammad Aledeh, MSc, BSc (Hons) is a mental healthcare professional and researcher at the Wiener Gesundheitsverbund, Vienna, and a volunteer hospital chaplain. His work investigates how compassion, self-compassion, and faith-based practices shape mental health outcomes across diverse clinical and sociodemographic groups. He is a member of the REACH (Research Ensemble for Advancement in Cross-cultural Healthcare) research group. Yasuhiro Kotera, PhD, is Associate Professor of Mental Health at the University of Nottingham; Collaborative Researcher at the University of Osaka; and Honorary Professor at Azerbaijan University. He has published more than 300 peer-reviewed papers in cross-cultural mental health, compassion, and nature-based interventions. He is the founder and lead of REACH (Research Ensemble for Advancement in Cross-cultural Healthcare) supporting a network of 55 researchers across 23 countries.
