For many years I had longed for an Aga so was delighted to inherit one when we moved to our present house some twenty years ago. Friends and colleagues who had them extolled their virtues by praising the way in which they provided a warm and welcoming kitchen, superb food and an indefinable centre to the whole home. I liked my Aga's culinary prowess immediately and quickly appreciated the lovely cosy atmosphere it gave to our creaky, old house full of packing boxes and little else. But what about all this gushy 'centre' nonsense? Over the years I have come to know what they meant and nod approvingly when it is ever mentioned as if I am part of some secret society of range owners and have 'the knowledge'. My range has become the heart of my home. It not only cooks superbly for every occasion from the simple to the sumptuous, and helps with umpteen hated household chores, especially the laundry, but is also where almost everyone congregates to discuss the day's news, troubles and successes.
