Synopsis


Introduction to Employment Law and Practice explains the key rights of employees and workers and the ways in which disputes with employers may be resolved. Chapter 1 introduces some basic concepts of employment law, including the status of employees and workers. Chapter 2 explains how employees and workers are protected from discrimination. In Chapter 3 the legal and practical aspects of recruitment are considered, together with the nature of a valid employment contract. Chapter 4 covers the range of family-friendly rights, including maternity and paternity rights. In Chapter 5 the ways in which employment disputes may be resolved are described, including the role of ACAS and the procedures in the Employment Tribunal. Chapter 6 discusses the drafting of settlement agreements and the circumstances in which they are used. In Chapter 7 the important issue of managing change in employment law is reviewed in the context of the development of the Employment Rights Bill. Finally, in Chapter 8 the communication skills required by employment lawyers are reviewed, both for individual clients and also for representatives of employers.
