Synopsis
Dans le prolongement de sa première monographie acclamée par la critique Sleeping by the Mississippi, Alec Soth a tourné son regard vers un autre plan d'eau emblématique, les chutes du Niagara. Comme pour ses photographies du Mississippi, les images de Niagara par Soth sont moins une question d’émerveillement naturel que de désir humain. «Je suis allé à Niagara pour la même raison que les jeunes mariés et les suicidaires», explique Soth, «le tonnerre incessant des chutes appelle juste une grande passion.» Travaillant pendant deux ans sur les côtés américain et canadien des chutes à l'aide d'un appareil photo grand format 8x10, les photographies sont rigoureusement composées et richement détaillées. Soth représente des jeunes mariés et des amoureux nus, des parkings de motel et des alliances de prêteur sur gages. Tout au long du livre, Soth a entrecoupé un certain nombre de lettres d'amour des sujets qu'il a photographiés. Nous lisons des histoires d'écrasements d'adolescents, d'affaires au travail, de chagrin et de suicide. Oscar Wilde a écrit à propos des chutes: «La vue de la magnifique cascade doit être l'une des déceptions les plus anciennes, sinon les plus vives, de la vie conjugale américaine.» À Soth’s Niagara, nous voyons à la fois la passion et la déception. Ses images sont une représentation remarquable de l’amour moderne et de ses conséquences.

In Soth's Niagara, we see both the passion and the disappointment. His pictures are a remarkable portrayal of modern love and it's aftermath. Alec Soth (b. 1969) is a photographer born and based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He has published over twenty-five books including Sleeping by the Mississippi (2004), NIAGARA (2006) Broken Manual (2010) and Songbook (2015). Soth has had over fifty solo exhibitions including survey shows organized by Jeu de Paume in Paris (2008), the Walker Art Center in Minnesota (2010) and Media Space in London (2015). Soth has been the recipient of numerous fellowships and awards, including the Guggenheim Fellowship (2013). In 2008, Soth created Little Brown Mushroom, a multi-media enterprise focused on visual storytelling. Soth is represented by Sean Kelly in New York, Weinstein Gallery in Minneapolis, Fraenkel Gallery in San Francisco, LOOCK Galerie in Berlin and is a member of Magnum Photos.
