Synopsis
An intriguing and captivating mystery novel. Harold Appleby has not seen his childhood friend for over half a century, yet when he spots a young runner on the beach early one morning, it could almost be his old friend incarnate. He treats it as one of life's little idiosyncrasies, but when his wife, Mary, a celebrated but now semi retired psychiatrist, is assigned a boy on psychiatric referral - the same boy Harold had seen on the beach - their stories become entwined. The boy is smart and articulate, but one also troubled, and when during a chance encounter he calls Harold by an old, forgotten nickname - only to promptly deny ever using it - Mary must forge a path to some very unexpected places to get to the bottom of the mystery. And what exactly did happen to Harold's childhood friend who was sent off to Burma during the Second World War? At the beginning of 1944 his division is cut off and isolated on a small jungle plateau while the Japanese army encroach from all sides. Is salvation at hand?
