Synopsis

"This publication accompanied a large-scale exhibition, Reason Gives No Answers, held at Newport Street Gallery from 11 September to 10 November 2019. The exhibition featured a varied selection of works from Damien Hirst's collection, including early pieces by Haim Steinbach, paintings by Francis Bacon, sculptures by Sarah Lucas, Peter Halley's signature Day-Glo geometric canvases, large-scale works by Gary Hume, and one of William S. Burroughs shotgun paintings. It was the second show of selected works from the collection after Simulation/Skin in 2017. Accompanying the full colour plates is an extract from a rare Burroughs text, Painting and Guns, first published by the cult American publisher Hanuman Books in 1992, in which Burroughs discusses the making of his shotgun art, and the relationship between painting and writing."
