Synopsis

Risk Rules is a concise guide to the assessment and prevention of violence risk using Structured Professional Judgment (SPJ). The last two decades have seen a rapid expansion of research in this area, and today's practitioners may need to sift through diverse findings to find the best approach for their situation. Making sense of this complexity, Risk Rules draws on up-to-date knowledge to offer a practical and interdisciplinary introduction to this dynamic subject for professionals and students.

The text builds on the overall approach of the seminal manual HCR-20 Violence Risk Management: Companion Guide (Douglas, Webster, Hart, Eaves & Ogloff, 2001), but goes much further by broadening the focus from one specific scheme to the various SPJ approaches that have been developed and tested over the two subsequent decades. Covering assessment processes and intervention strategies, and featuring contributions from a host of experts drawn from psychology, psychiatry, social work, nursing, criminology and law, this accessible book presents knowledge and guidance that has stood the test of time and has been further refined through contemporary endeavour.
