Synopsis

Battle, victory and death in the world of tradition.

Revolting against the modern world’s reduction of war to political, economic, and ‘humanitarian’ interests, Julius Evola’s Metaphysics of War summons ancient and medieval sources from both East and West to reveal how war can be seen as a unique arena of heroism and spiritual transformation at the origins of civilisation.

Written around the Second World War, the essays in this volume explore the existential situation of war and the warrior. Drawing on Nordic, Roman, Vedic, and other sacred texts and rituals, Evola highlights the warrior’s potential to rediscover the meaning of life and reconnect with metaphysical reality through mind and action. Unlike today’s armies of soldiers and mercenaries owned by a decadent ruling class, the authentic warrior tradition is a path toward transcendence which extends beyond the battlefield to transform all spheres of life and culture.

This revised and expanded edition of Metaphysics of War features additional essays and a new foreword and introduction connecting Evola’s ideas to both his era and our own.

À propos de l'auteur

Julius Evola (1898-1974) has been one of the most misunderstood and controversial authors of the twentieth century. Born in Rome, Evola began his pursuit of truth as a Dadaist painter and an Idealist philosopher, but quickly lost his taste for modernism and moved on to metaphysics, religion, and the occult. Encountering the work of René Guénon, who became a lifelong friend, Evola embraced his concept of the Primordial Tradition and his critique of the modern world. Believing that Tradition was an idea which should encompass the social as well as the spiritual world, Evola saw some hope for a remedy to the ills of modernity in Fascism, although he never joined the Party, and his writings on the subject were frequently critical. After 1945, Evola remained aloof from politics, and attempted to define the most effective stance for an inhabitant of the modern age to adopt and still retain something of traditional wisdom. In recent years, Evola's ideas have given rise to a new breed of spiritual seekers and anti-modernists. Arktos has also published his books The Path of Cinnabar (2009), Fascism Viewed from the Right (2013), Notes on the Third Reich (2013), A Traditionalist Confronts Fascism (2015), A Handbook for Right-Wing Youth (2017), Recognitions (2017), The Bow and the Club (2018), and The Myth of the Blood (2018).
