Helen feels left out on a family holiday to the Greek island of Lesbos when her brother Tom brings his friend Mark. But when the three of them secretly befriend a stray dog sitting in a tree they find a common purpose. They call him Brillo because of his rough coat, smuggle him into their villa, feed and bathe him and dream of keeping him for ever. When Brillo is badly injured in a car crash, they feel sick with despair. They beg, borrow and steal to raise cash to fund his vet’s bill. When their parents discover the children have plundered their wardrobe to sell their clothes along with their own in the village market, they are furious. Then the children receive help from an unlikely ally. In a life and death race against time, they and their new friend hope to touch the hearts – and open the wallets – of a nation so they can bring Brillo home.
