In this powerful, poetic and insightful theological treatise based on her direct involvement with South Africa’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission, of which her father was Chair, Mpho Tutu van Furth wrestles with the reality that the commission yielded much truth, an astonishing amount of forgiveness, but very little restitution and almost no reconciliation. She has found that around the world people are wanting to engage the conversation around reparation but often in ways that do nothing to upset established power dynamics. But reparation suggests the potential to heal, suggests Tutu van Furth, an like the transformative idea of forgiveness modelled by Jesus, can be understood as a spiritual practice.

Paperback. Etat : new. Paperback. South African author, pastor and activist, Mpho Tuti van Furth argues that while we think of reparations in relation to the colonial powers and the colonised as both a remunerative act and a punitive one, reparations rightly engaged should be part of a spiritual process of forgiveness and reconciliation. Reparations would be an element in a process of atonement and restorative justice and that sees the need for acknowledgement of the damage done to the enslaved and colonised; healing and restoration of the lost humanity of the perpetrators; and repair of the violated relationships between the human and ecological victims and the human perpetrators.
