Synopsis

Clinical work in forensic settings is challenging, disturbing, thrilling and unique. It requires an ability to build connections, and to think about providing more than just therapy. This needs to be enabled by a compassionate culture – one that promotes the importance of reflecting on relational dynamics at all levels of the organization. After all, if staff and teams don’t have time to think, then it is unlikely that patients with their histories of damage, restriction and abuse will find ways to heal their own unhelpful thinking patterns.

Cognitive Analytic Therapy (CAT) is an accessible model for understanding human behaviour that has a relational approach at its very heart. As such, it is well-placed to offer a common language for teams and organizations. Reflective Practice in Forensic Settings draws on wide-ranging clinical experience to explore how the CAT model can be applied to develop reflective practice in an integrative and relational way across three key areas: with individual staff, in relation to teams and on an organizational level. Guidance is also included for practitioners wishing to develop more relationally informed, reflective services.

Gathering a range of voices to share innovation and stimulate dialogue, Reflective Practice in Forensic Settings offers an integrative, accessible introduction to the enhancement of workplace communication, collaboration, learning and development using the CAT model.
