Synopsis

This book addresses some of the barriers that hold back greater consensus and theoretical integration within psychology and psychotherapy, particularly the impact of our contrasting epistemologies. It argues for the theoretically unified functioning of the human mind and is supportive of both integrative and single model therapies.

The book overviews five major theoretical approaches to psychotherapy (attachment, humanistic, psychodynamic, cognitive and behavioural) and dialectical analysis of their overlaps and compatible differences leads to the development of a unifying model of human psychological functioning and processes of change. This model then takes central place in a meta-framework which integrates the overlapping and unique impacts of our different psychotherapies.

The approach is brought to life by the analysis and discussion of a brief integrative therapy. Potential implications for theory development, and psychotherapy research, practice and training are also explored.
