Synopsis

A Gambit Classic Reissue: Hans Berliner is one of the most successful correspondence chess players of all time, and was utterly dominant in the 5th World Championship. Here, for the first time, he explains the set of principles – his System – that he used to guide him to the right moves. Readers will be astonished by the simplicity and power of Berliner’s methods, as he takes several major openings and subjects them to System principles, and finds radically new approaches to them.

  • Explains in detail the workings of a World Champion’s decision-making process
  • Helps improve your analytical methods
  • Features thought-provoking analysis of key chess openings

Dr Hans Berliner enjoyed considerable success as an over-the-board player before turning to correspondence chess, and in this form of the game, his systematic approach made him a world-beater. His lifetime score was 94 wins, 1 loss, and 10 draws. After winning the 5th World Championship by a margin of three clear points, he turned his efforts towards computer programming. He first wrote a backgammon program that beat the reigning world champion in 1979, and then he moved on to chess programming. His Hitech program won the World Computer Championship twice and was one of the first programs to score good results against top-level human players.

"elucidates the former World Correspondence Champion's deep-thinking powerful approach to chess ... makes for compelling reading" - GM Paul Motwani, Scottish Chess

"[Berliner's] artistic creativity comes shining through" - Alan Borwell, Scottish Correspondence Chess

"There are many issues that Berliner covers that will make you think even if you do not agree with them." - Australian Chess Forum

"Probably last year's most controversial opening publication" - New in Chess

"I may never be able to emulate Berliner's system of thinking, but I did find it applicable and beneficial in terms of positional analysis" - Mark Donlan, Chess Horizons

"If you would like a different perspective on the openings and insights into both how (heuristic) computers and some humans play chess, this is an interesting book and deserves a wider audience." - Alex Dunne, Correspondence Chess News
