Synopsis

The mind training of Tibetan Buddhism cultivates wisdom and compassion through 59 slogans. In this book, Dhirananda and Viryabodi offer commentaries and exercises to bring the slogans to life. The teachings inspire, challenge, and confront us with life’s difficulties and our own limitations, helping develop an enlightened perspective. With regular practice, our heart-minds can shift from a limited and self-centred view to something more connected and liberated, able to prioritise the welfare of others and the situations in which we find ourselves.

Lojong is a guide or manual on how to develop and broaden our compassion. But it is also a guide on how to develop the wisdom that is a prerequisite for all-encompassing universal compassion. As humans, we have an innate ability to be compassionate towards other humans, but also towards living beings that do not belong to our own species. Throughout evolution, our ability as humans to cooperate with and care for each other, even the weak and defenceless in the herd, has been important for our survival. We take care of our children who for many years lack the ability to survive on their own, but we also take care of members of the pack who are old and sick. The ability to appreciate altruistic acts can be observed already in infants.
