This workbook takes tutors and their learners through lessons 16 - 20 of Part 1 of the Citizen Literacy Programme. It is designed to be used with the tutor handbooks that are available as part of the programme series and the free web learning resources available from our website.
Our free web resources include the revolutionary free Citizen Literacy Learner web app, which does not require user registration, has no adverts, no in-app purchases and takes no personal data. It features a voice driven interface suitable for low literacy learners with two virtual teachers that provide instruction and personalised feedback for the learners. Importantly, the design avoids looking like a children’s learning resource – a strongly demotivating factor for older learners. There is multimedia interactivity and gameplay, together with voice and handwriting recognition, and instant personalised feedback. This is enabling some of the first online independent learning opportunities for low literacy learners. From a standing start, by the end of lesson 3, learners are beginning to read and write simple sentences.
This is the fourth in a series of workbooks for tutors to use with their learners when completing the Citizen Literacy programme. It provides the resources for tutors and learners to use when working through the exercises in each lesson. Each exercise in a lesson plan in a tutor handbook is clearly linked to section in a learner workbook to make it easy for tutors and learners to find the related learning resources.
The accompanying tutor handbooks are suitable for both experienced and new literacy tutors and provides a useful and friendly introduction to the programme, lesson plans and tutor notes that are linked to the learner workbooks and free web resources. It provides a structured yet flexible educational design that can be delivered as it is or adapted to local needs (which we encourage). For tutors who are new to adult literacy teaching and the use of structured phonics methods the handbook provides a useful training and professional development resource.
The Citizen Literacy programme has been designed by experienced literacy tutors to overcome the shortage of good quality learning resources to help learning providers and tutors who are supporting adult learners to improve their reading and writing skills. We are taking a radical approach to tackling the problem of low literacy in society by developing an integrated set of paper and powerful digital learning resources to support tutors and their learners. The programme will be useful for ESOL tutors to use with learners who need to develop their reading and writing skills. The whole programme is split into 3 parts each with 30 lessons that take beginner literacy learners all the way through to a good level of functional literacy that enables their full participation in society and work.
Citizen Literacy takes learners forwards simultaneously across a broad number of topics quickly to give confidence and provide practical applications of useful skills. These are the skills that are developed in the programme:
