Synopsis

The Jennifer O’Reilly Memorial Lecture 2023
Pater Ecgberct of Rathmelsigi: The hero of Bede’s Historia Ecclesiastica?
Dáibhí Ó Cróinín

Pater Ecgberct was one of many English monks in seventh-century Ireland, though, unlike others, Ecgberct never returned to Britain and was famously instrumental in bringing the community on Iona to accept the Dionysian Easter reckoning in 716. Despite Ecgberct’s long exile in Ireland, Ó Cróinín argues that he remained remarkably well informed about activities in Northumbria, and underlines Ecgberct’s significance for ecclesiastical and secular politics on both sides of the Irish Sea. The lecture concludes with an intriguing discussion of the etymology of Rath Melsigi, the Irish monastery where Ecgberct spent many years, that further reveals the interconnections between Ireland, Britain and continental Europe in this period.

Professor Dáibhí Ó Cróinín taught for 40 years in the University of Galway History Department, and has published widely on Early Irish History, Hiberno-Latin literature, Medieval Latin Palaeography, and Historical Chronology.

The Memorial Lecture in honour of Jennifer O’Reilly was established in 2017 by the School of History, University College Cork. Each year a distinguished scholar is invited to speak on either the age of Bede or medieval iconography, two subjects that Dr O’Reilly explored in her research and teaching.
