Synopsis

Pinnarism is at the root of cat inequality, the mistaken belief that cats with large ears (pinnae) are superior to those with small ears. These cats, or micropinnates as they are sometimes known, have been looked down upon, taken for granted, verbally and physically abused, and barred from all the important tasks such as teaching to hunt, standing up to dogs and tree climbing. There is no good reason for this unfair treatment; it is a consequence of prejudice, pure and simple. In The Pinnarism Project, my esteemed colleague, Wilberforce Shorthair, the Mayor of Felixtown, is determined to stamp out pinnarism. Is he successful? Follow kittens Hamish and Orwell as they explore the peaks and troughs of pinnarism and help Wilberforce in his task. They are attacked, abused and imprisoned, and whether they win through is often in doubt. But their story is optimistic and invigorating, and may be of benefit to other animal species across the societal spectrum.

Meet Pinnarism - a world in which cats may not use the word 'ears' but must resort to 'Hearing Organs' (HOs) on pain of unspecified but severe punishment. Where some cats have met an unpleasant fate for less, and where the rules change all the time. An elegant, charming and pointed exposition of a feline society with its free and not so free speech and its subjective judgments - and an all too apt reflection of our times.
