Synopsis

Alfredo the artist is asked by King Lenry to paint a portrait of Anya, a beautiful girl who lives in a remote village in his far away kingdom. Alfredo is the third person to be asked as there is some magic in the air which makes it hard to produce a true likeness of the girl. He eventually produces a wonderful painting but it causes problems for the king, leads Alfredo on a journey of discovery and turns the life of Anya upside down in a most unexpected way.

I have been creating stories since childhood, not always written down, but always with pleasure. I had a short story published in 1999 and from 2001 to 2009 regularly had poems and articles published in relation to spirituality. I have written more short stories recently and continue to write poems as well as working on children's stories. The outline of Portrait of a Princess was conceived some twenty years ago but since retirement I have more time to write and the story has developed. I am a nature-lover and keen gardener, working voluntarily in a garden for the Kent Wildlife Trust and these influences are reflected in my writing. Following an animated discussion with an Irish friend, I have decided to use the pen name Sarah Shaughnessy for literary publications. This is the maiden name of my highly-intelligent, enormous, scary grandmother and I think she would be pleased.

Derry Mountford studied art at the Byam Shaw and St Martins gaining a BA Hons in History of Design, but has been drawing almost compulsively, since before she could walk. She has exhibited with the Royal Academy and regularly at the Mall and Westminster Galleries with, among others, the Royal Society of British Artists, the Royal Society of Miniature Painters Sculptors and Printmakers, and the Society of Women Artists. She has had one man shows in Japan, London and Cambridge; contributed to numerous group exhibitions in public galleries including Brighton Museum, Bury St Edmunds Art Gallery, the Fry Art Gallery, Saffron Walden Arts Centre, Cambridge Guild Hall, the East of England Show; as well as selling work in many commercial galleries in London, and other major cities.
