Synopsis

In this skilful blending of historical narration and personal memoir, Jack takes us on a gripping journey through the secret world of code-breaking during World War II. The author traces the links from Horsforth, a village on the outskirts of Leeds, onto the decks of the HMS Aubrietia, the Royal Navy corvette that the village sponsored. In the dangerous North Atlantic seas of World War II, where 'wolfpacks' of German submarines patrolled the waters, Aubrietia's encounter with U- boat 110 helps to uncover the coded mysteries of the Enigma machine - which leads us to Bletchley Park and the astonishing work of British cryptanalysts, such as Alan Turing. With close personal links to the places and people involved, Jack shares his admiration for the dedicated code-breakers and engineers whose activities helped defeat Hitler's military might and win the war for Britain.
