For space adventure lovers, Amethyst promises to be a feast. Outlining the troubled past of its main protagonists, Amethyst and Vander, through their odyssey culminating in finding solace in each other’s company, Luke serves a thrilling space adventure that is sure to regale sci-fi buffs. His gaming and naval background contribute to the authentic and gripping combat scenes. Col. Cirell Bathen-Mora volunteers to rescue Amethyst who has been sold by her father when a child and been the object of a hi-tech serum experiment, which is actually intended to help in the interrogation of prisoners of war but ends up having unintended consequences. The whole tale is set in the backdrop of an interstellar conflict between the SRA and the UPDA and serves as a reminder of the horrors of good people trapped in a bad war.
The narrative briskly transports you back and forth from one planet to another and has you spellbound with strong female characters such as Vesse, Laurana, Scarlett and Andromeda. The cliffhanger scene from Vexus is a nail-biter. The conflict between Cirell’s commitment to duty and his family is starkly portrayed. You cannot help shed a tear for some of the characters. The author has achieved a near perfect blend of action, romance, and tragedy. Being a military man himself, he has not romanticized war but portrayed its stark brutality and merely hinted at the behind-the-scene motivations of some of its prosecutors.
The novel ends up whetting your appetite for more. There is a very rich plot, which can be fleshed out further in many more exciting sequels. Time to lay your hands on this first in the series.
