Born in England, growing up in Australia, ordination training in England, with curacies in Southwark and St Albans’ dioceses during the bombing of the Second World War, he had a resilience and creativeness which was to serve him well during his thirty-eight years’ service in Africa, as a priest in Pretoria and Swaziland (eSwatini), bishop in Malawi, Archbishop of the Anglican Province of Central Africa, and then over thirty years’ ministry in the Diocese of London.
