This is Francine's story. She comes from an aristocratic background but she must leave all that behind and attempt a perilous and illegal journey across France to a port where she might bribe a captain to take the family to safety. But the path holds many pitfalls. The risk of discovery is high and there are other dangers and threats to overcome. Francine must protect her children at all costs, but ultimately this leads to a crisis of conscience.
