Synopsis

Britain voted. Someone made sure the result could not finish.

At 22:06 on general-election night, seven British count centres are attacked.

The obvious explanation is terrorism. The truth is far more dangerous.

The bombs do not need to destroy the ballot papers. Three carefully chosen candidates are killed before their constituency results can be declared, triggering a lawful process that stops those elections and forces fresh polls. Four other counts are thrown into chaos but survive.

By morning, Britain still has a government. It still has functioning courts, police, armed forces and election law. What it does not have is a stable parliamentary majority.

And someone appears to have designed exactly that outcome.

Major Asha Bennett is one of the first specialists into the wreckage at Wensford. She expects blast patterns, evidence and bodies. Instead, inside the remains of a case linked to a government resilience exercise, she finds an intelligence field identifier she knows by heart.

It belongs to Ethan Rowe.

Five years earlier, Ethan was the man Asha loved, lived with and intended to build a future beside. Then the MI6 officer disappeared from her bed before dawn without an honest goodbye. Now his name has surfaced inside a bomb — and a terrorist network is telling the world that he helped make the attacks possible.

Ethan knows the accusation is built from real pieces of his secret life. Real operations. Real sources. Real procurement routes. Someone has taken the machinery of his past, stripped away the truths that made it lawful and rebuilt him as the perfect traitor.

To prove it, he will have to expose secrets he once believed were keeping people alive — including the truth he denied Asha five years ago.

Meanwhile, former Metropolitan Police detective Daniel Sykes and former MI5 officer Fiona Ward are pulled into an unprecedented court-supervised evidence-preservation operation. Its powers are narrow, temporary and deliberately divided. But as government records are deleted, lawful-looking transfer orders begin moving evidence and protected people towards a single destination, and the pressure grows for somebody to take control.

The press gives that temporary authority a name:

The Shadow Mandate.

What begins as an investigation into seven coordinated attacks becomes a struggle over something more fundamental: who is allowed to act when democracy is frightened, how emergency power can remain accountable — and how easily protection becomes possession when the right people believe they alone can keep the country safe.

For Asha and Ethan, the danger is brutally personal. Their attraction survived five years of anger and silence. Trust may not. Before she can decide whether there is anything left between them, Asha needs the one thing Ethan has never given her: the whole truth, including the part that makes him look worst.

The votes have not been stolen.
The law has not collapsed.
Someone has simply learned how to weaponise the space between them.

The Broken Majority is Book One of The Shadow Mandate, a British political and espionage thriller series of terrorism, intelligence, institutional power, investigation, action and emotionally consequential adult relationships.
