Synopsis

Jim watches a family move from his garden into number 30 in a flurry of disorganised chaos. Two children catch his eye: a boy with a football and a girl with a freckled face and fiery, unruly ginger hair emerge from the removal van. Little could Jim have known how this young girl would bring joy, happiness, fear and tragedy into our lives.

Set against the splendour of the Coast-to-Coast Walk, the story centres on the relationship between nature and the main characters' lives as they encounter some of England's loveliest and harshest landscapes. Focusing on Alice, the story traces her tragic life, from a happy childhood to a return to Helvellyn to be reunited with her father in rest.

Through Jim's memories, the book examines their many adventures, his relationship with Alice, the joys of young love, the despair of rejection, the tragedy of her illness, renewed hope, and her death. The central theme is one of love, which no adversary could destroy, and of a woman who left an indelible mark of love on all she met, a mark that time and circumstance could not dull.
