Synopsis
In the year A.D. 878, Danish invaders forced King Alfred into hiding in the marshes. He found refuge at the home of a woman who asked him to keep an eye on the cakes by the fire. when she returned, She found them burning and so rightly scolded him for being a useless wretch, only too happy to eat her danishes but too lazy to mind them before they’re ready.
Alfred recovered from this fiasco, drove the Danes back, and united the Anglo-Saxon kingdom under his leadership, all recounted in Jacob Abbott’s classic biography of the famed ruler.
