Although it can stand alone, the Resurrection is designed to be a sequel to The Crucifixion by John Stainer, my great grandfather. The piece employs the same amateur choir, soloists and organ as Stainer's.
The first challenge was to create a text. Stainer's music is subtitled 'a meditation on the sacred passion of the holy redeemer'. I wanted to achieve something similar. In addition to telling the story of the resurrection appearances, I followed Rev J Sparrow-Simpson's precedent of selecting passages widely from Scripture which reflected on the extraordinary story of the resurrection.
Adopting the recitative which Stainer employed for the narrative passages seemed appropriate, as its use recalls Bach's St Matthew Passion; when he was a boy, Stainer sang treble in the first UK performance of this work on 6th April 1854 at the Hannover Square Rooms in London.
I finally decided that since the gospel was to go out to people of every tribe, nation and language, the choral numbers should embrace varying musical styles, ranging from West Indian to liturgical. A few hymns with well-known tunes for the audience to join in complete the mix. I hope you enjoy the result.
