Synopsis

You’re exhausted, but the moment you go to bed your brain seems to wake up.

You check the clock. Work out how many hours are left before morning. Try not to think about tomorrow. Tell yourself you must relax. Before long, you’re not simply awake; you’re worrying about being awake.

Stop Trying So Hard to Sleep looks at why this happens and, more importantly, what you can do about it.

Drawing on the principles of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I), the book explains how worry about sleep can become part of the problem. It shows why forcing yourself to sleep rarely works and how changing some of the habits and thoughts that surround bedtime can gradually make sleep feel more natural again.

You’ll find practical ways to deal with racing thoughts, middle-of-the-night waking and the frustration of lying awake, including short wind-down routines, breathing and relaxation exercises, worry dumping and cognitive reframing. The book also looks at the things that happen away from the bedroom – caffeine, alcohol, naps, daylight, exercise and daily routines – and how they can affect your nights.

There is no perfect bedtime routine to follow and no promise that one technique will suddenly transform your sleep. You may find some approaches useful straight away and others less so. The idea is to understand what is keeping you awake and build a way of sleeping that works with your life rather than taking it over.

Because the more sleep becomes something you have to achieve, the harder it can be to find.

If you’ve spent too many nights staring at the clock thinking, I have to sleep now, this book will help you take some of that pressure away.

You don’t need perfect sleep. You need sleep to stop being a battle.
