About the Boreal Forest. What's the big deal with the boreal forest? This amazing, beautiful ecosystem also known as taiga wraps around the whole globe in the northern hemisphere crossing Canada, Alaska, Scandinavia and Russia. It acts as a huge carbon bank for the planet, filters much of the earth's water through the many lakes, streams and wetlands and is home to an abundance wildlife that have adapted to live there. Many species also pass through the boreal, including close to 300 different kinds of birds. One could consider the boreal forest as a big giant nursery for wildlife big and small, offering the ideal habitat for nature to thrive. The boreal forest is one of these critical environments that deserves attention and safeguards to protect it against exploitation through logging, mining and dwindling habitat. Sadly, many don't even know this forest exists. How can one protect something that they don't even know exists? As an environmental artist I have spent over 20 years exploring and working to raise awareness of the boreal through my photographs, drawings and paintings. I have traveled from Alaska, across all of Canada and the Nordic countries. By foot, canoe, tuck or float plane. I have visited deep into the wilderness where most never have the chance to visit so I can bring the story of the boreal forest home. Baxter in The Boreal was inspired through these journeys. My hope is that we learn to appreciate and understand the critical role that these living landscapes provide to our planet and how we can help to protect the wild spaces we share on earth.Kelly
