In 1788, British Marine Officer Watkin Tench stepped ashore at Botany Bay with the First Fleet. Happily, this curious young captain of the marines was an effortless storyteller and he set about documenting the story of a new colony in narrative prose. Widely regarded as an important historical document, Watkin Tench's 1788 is equally valued by critics and readers as a work of classic literature, the first of many to come from Australia.
