Synopsis

Zoe Howard is 17 when her brother, Russell, introduces her to Stephen Quayle. Aloof and harsh, Stephen is unlike anyone she has ever met, 'a weird, irascible character out of some dense Russian novel'. His sister, Anna, is shy and thoughtful, 'a little orphan'. They may come from different social worlds but all four will spend their lives moving in and out of each other's shadow. Set amid the lush gardens and grand stone houses that line the north side of Sydney Harbour, this is an intensen psychological thriller about family and love, tyranny and freedom.

Revue de presse

'A subtle yet wounding dissection of friendship and class in Australia... Less malignant than The Watch Tower, In Certain Circles is no less psychologically profound. Rather, its quietude and graceful turning of the screws bring it all the more closer to a kind of truth. It is a graceful reply to the questions of what really shapes us, and what might actually constitute a wasted life.' - --The Guardian

'In Certain Circles, which appeared this year in the U.S., is a polished, funny, bleak novel about the subject that has continuously obsessed Harrower: the relations between men and women, specifically the dynamics of power at play in those relations in an era of sanctioned sexism.' --James Wood's Best Fiction of 2014 in The New Yorker
