Synopsis

Dr Gertrude Glossip is the preeminent Queen of the Walk, who for 25 seasons has accompanied Rainbow history lovers back through Adelaide's queer history. Gertrude's walking tours have been a highlight of South Australia's Feast Festival since its inception, and she has since expanded her repertoire through history walks across the globe.

With Queen of the Walk you can now take the highlights of the Adelaide history walks home with you. Gertrude has collated a greatest hits series of 8 walks, including stories from her earliest queer history tours right up to the latest updates and recent additions to Adelaide's queer archives.

Queen of the Walk is the culmination of decades of research, performance, activism and firsthand experience from Adelaide queer icon Dr Gertrude Glossip (Will Sergeant). The book is history in itself as the personalised retelling of significant Adelaide queer historical moments from Gertrude's unique point of view and at times direct involvement.

Join Gertrude as she regales the essentials of queer Adelaide history, featuring moments such as the murder of Dr George Duncan, some secrets of the Adelaide parklands, the life and work of Bert Edwards, the queer café and bar culture throughout the decades, and many highlights of the evolution of queer arts and culture. Gertrude explores other events including some darker tales that triggered the push for queer rights, the uplifting successes of our local activists, and even some delightfully intriguing stories where your imagination is left to connect the dots.

A propos du livre

À propos de l'auteur

Will Sergeant and Dr Gertrude Glossip are two sides of one coin. Will has been involved in gay activism since the 1970s. He participated the first Adelaide Pride March in 1973 and the first Sydney Mardi Gras in 1978. Gertrude, his alter-ego, was created in 1993. Both have been active participants in every Feast Festival in a variety of roles and performances. Gertrude's walks on history, art and zoo wild sex are now the 'stuff of legend'! Will has served on numerous Feast advisory committees and was named an ambassador for the 2018 Festival. In 2021, he was named South Australian Historian of the Year by the History Council of South Australia for his contribution to Adelaide Rainbow History.
