Synopsis

Traditionally attributed to Severus ibn al-Muqaffaʿ, The History of the Patriarchs of Alexandria is a many-voiced chronicle of the Coptic patriarchate, from Saint Mark through Pope Tawadros II.

Its patriarchal lives follow councils and confessions of faith, monasteries and churches, relations with rulers, persecution and renewal across Roman, Byzantine, Arab, Fatimid, Ayyubid, Mamluk, Ottoman, and modern Egypt.

The historical authors and compilers include Menas the Scribe, George the Archdeacon, John of Awsim, John of Saint Macarius, Michael of Tinnis, Mawhūb ibn Manṣūr ibn Mufarrij, John ibn Ṣāʿid, Pope Mark III ibn Zarʿah, Maʿānī Abū al-Makārim, Yūsāb of Fuwwah, ʿAbd al-Masīḥ Salīb al-Masʿūdī, and later continuators.

Prepared by Dr Bishoy Marcus, this English edition provides explanatory notes on people, places, Scripture, historical measures, and difficult readings. The translated record reaches Pope Cyril V. A clearly separated original modern continuation, written for this edition by Dr Bishoy Marcus, follows Pope John XIX through Pope Tawadros II.

For scholars, clergy, students, and general readers, this volume offers a readable path through one of Christianity’s longest ecclesiastical histories.
