Synopsis

THE PASSION AND RESURRECTION

How can the Passion and Resurrection narratives of the four Gospels be read together when their details appear to differ? Buṭrus al-Sadamantī—Peter of Sadamant—a Coptic monk, priest, and theologian of the later thirteenth century, addresses that question in The Book of Rectification concerning the Sufferings of the Lord Christ, generally regarded as his principal exegetical work.

The book begins with an extended account of interpretation: what it is, why it is necessary, and how difficult passages should be explained. Al-Sadamantī then follows the Gospel narratives from Gethsemane through the arrest, hearings, Crucifixion, burial, Resurrection, appearances, and Ascension.

He presents objections, distinguishes possible meanings, compares the Evangelists, and draws doctrinal and moral conclusions. Christ’s prayer concerning the cup, the strengthening angel, Peter’s denial and restoration, the hour of the Crucifixion, the women’s visits to the tomb, Thomas’s doubt, and the signs of the risen body become occasions for reflection on the Incarnation, providence, freedom, repentance, forgiveness, death, and resurrection.

Based on the Cairo printing catalogued as 1890, this English edition includes an editorial introduction and explanatory notes. It brings a major work of medieval Coptic interpretation to readers of Scripture, theology, Church history, and Christian spirituality.
